Look, we’re not going to promise that any dental procedure is completely without sensation, because everyone experiences things differently. Every extraction at our practice starts with thorough local anaesthetic to numb the area completely. You’ll feel pressure and movement, but the sharp pain associated with extractions should be blocked. We don’t start until you’re properly numb, promise. For patients who need more than local anaesthetic, we offer additional options. The right choice depends on your anxiety level, the complexity of the extraction, and your personal preferences.
Happy Gas: Taking the Edge Off
Nitrous oxide (commonly called happy gas) is a mild sedation option available for adults 18+. You breathe it through a small nose mask during the procedure, and it creates a relaxed, slightly floaty feeling. Kinda nice, actually! Happy gas doesn’t put you to sleep. You’re still aware of what’s happening, but you feel calmer and more detached from it. Many patients describe it as taking the worry away. The effects wear off within minutes of removing the mask, so you can drive yourself home afterwards. But it’s not a bad idea to have someone to drive you home, either. This option works well for patients who are nervous but can cope with dental treatment when they’re relaxed. If your anxiety is more severe, you might need something stronger.
General Anaesthesia: Sleep Through the Whole Thing
For patients with severe dental phobia, complex extractions, or multiple teeth that need removing, we offer in-house general anaesthesia. This means you’re completely asleep during the procedure and wake up with it all done. Magic! Not every dental practice can offer this. We have a dedicated general anaesthesia facility at our Warragul clinic, so you don’t need to go to hospital for dental work under GA. Our team is trained and experienced in providing this level of care safely. General anaesthesia requires more preparation, including fasting beforehand and having someone drive you home. After the Extraction
How you feel after an extraction depends partly on the complexity of the procedure and partly on how you heal. Some people bounce back quickly; others need a few days to recover. We’ll give you clear aftercare instructions and make sure you know what to expect. Some discomfort and swelling is normal in the days following an extraction.
