What’s the Difference Between Implant-Supported Dentures and All-On-4 Implants?

Hi, Dr. Anand here from Dentelle by WDC.

Are you currently wearing dentures, or do you have a lot of missing teeth and are considering replacing all of them with implants? Well, you’ve probably heard of implant-supported dentures and All-On-4 implants, but don’t know what’s the difference?

Well, let’s have a chat about them!

With All-On-4, your new teeth are fixed in place permanently. They’re attached to four or more implants, meaning you don’t remove them. They function just like real teeth and only a dentist can take them out if needed.

On the other hand, implant-supported dentures, also called overdentures, are removable. They clip onto implants placed in your jaw, giving you better stability than regular dentures, but you still need to take them out for cleaning.

Now, here’s where it gets interesting. In the lower jaw, implant-supported dentures can be a great cost-effective alternative because they only require two implants. This means the procedure is simpler, faster, and more affordable than All-On-4 while still giving you a secure and stable fit. This means no more loose lower dentures sliding around.

But in the upper jaw, implant-supported dentures need four implants because the bone is softer. Since they require just as many implants as All-On-4, and additional steps to create a custom-fitted denture, they aren’t necessarily cheaper than All-On-4, and may even cost more in some cases. So typically, in the upper jaw, we tend to go for a standard All-On-4 with the teeth permanently fixed into your implants.

So, to summarise, All-On-4 gives you fixed teeth that function like your natural teeth. Implant-supported dentures are a good lower-jaw option for those wanting a more affordable, stable alternative to traditional dentures. In the upper jaw, All-On-4 is usually the better option, giving you a stronger, more permanent solution with minimal extra steps.

So I hope you now understand the difference between these two options. If you’re considering an upgrade from removable dentures with a more stable solution, we would love to help.
